Writing a homebrew datasheet
The quickest way to a fair homebrew unit is to start from a unit that already plays the way yours should.
Start from a neighbour
Add the closest existing unit from its faction page, rename it, and change one thing at a time. Its stats, weapon profiles and points are the baseline.
Stat lines by role
- Light infantry sits around T3 to T4, 1 wound, 5+ or 4+ save.
- Heavy infantry: T4 to T5, 2 to 3 wounds, 3+ save.
- Monsters and vehicles: T9 and up, 10 or more wounds, and usually a Damaged line for the last few wounds.
Abilities
One or two abilities with a clear trigger. Reuse the game's own wording (Aura, once per battle, in your Command phase) so nobody has to learn a new mechanic at the table.
Points
Compare with two or three units of the same role and toughness. When in doubt, price it a little high and let it earn a discount after a few games.
